Joohyun Jo - Yojo • Working with Restraint in Fine-Line Tattooing and Natural Form 28 December 2025

Yojo is a South Korean tattoo artist currently working between Perth and Melbourne, Australia. With seven to eight years of experience, her practice centers on fine-line floral tattoos defined by restraint, balance, and natural movement. Rather than relying on bold statements, her work speaks through subtle detail, soft shading, and compositions that follow the body’s natural lines. Her artistic background extends beyond tattooing. Having studied street dance at an art college and grown up immersed in music, film, and visual art, Yojo approaches tattooing with a strong sense of rhythm and flow.

Throughout the interview, Yojo speaks less about ambition and more about commitment: To the work itself, to steady growth, and to staying true to a quiet artistic voice in an increasingly loud industry. Rather than chasing visibility, she focuses on building trust, refining her craft, and allowing her work to evolve naturally over time.

For the readers who are not familiar with you, how would you introduce yourself?
Hello, my name is Yojo, a tattoo artist from South Korea currently based between Perth and Melbourne, Australia. I’ve been tattooing for around 7 to 8 years, and I mainly specialize in fine-line floral tattoos that focus on delicate detail and natural flow.

Where did your fascination for tattoos come from?
I’ve always been deeply interested in art, music, and film since I was young. In particular, I’ve been drawn to artworks and films that center around nature: Plants, landscapes, or organic forms. They bring me a sense of calm and peace, and I think that emotion naturally became the foundation of my artistic expression.

How and when did you start tattooing?
I majored in street dance at an art college, and many of my close friends were involved in creative fields such as painting, dance, and music. Being surrounded by such people naturally led me to the world of tattooing. I started tattooing around 2018, and that’s when I realized it was something I wanted to devote myself to.

Where are you based?
I’ve been working in Australia for the past two years. Before that, I was based in Seoul, South Korea, where I first built my foundation as a tattoo artist. I initially started working in Melbourne, and recently I relocated to Perth, where I continue to work and develop new projects.

How would you describe the tattoo scene in (your country) these days?
The tattoo scene is becoming more diverse and less confined by categories as time goes by. Nowadays, it’s hard to define tattoos by a single genre, and personally, I really appreciate this evolution. However, I also notice that some apprentices take tattooing lightly and start without proper preparation, which I believe is something that still needs improvement.

How would you define your tattoo style?
My tattoo style can be described as delicate fine lines, soft shading, and designs that flow with the body’s natural curves. I enjoy creating tattoos that highlight each client’s unique body line and skin tone, making every piece feel organic and harmonious.

What kind of tattoo projects do you like to do the most?
I love working on large-scale tattoos that make use of the body’s wide surfaces. Such as the back, hips, or thighs. Designing compositions that move freely across those areas is both challenging and exciting for me. I constantly have new ideas I want to bring to life, which keeps me motivated and inspired.

What’s the main source of inspiration for your tattoos?
I often visit botanical gardens and parks to observe flowers and plants in real life. I also find inspiration in music videos by artists I love and in the photographs of vintage-inspired photographers. I believe inspiration is everywhere, you just have to keep your mind open and be in a peaceful, stress-free state to truly see it.

What’s the most challenging aspect of being a tattoo artist in 2025?
One of the biggest challenges these days is keeping up with fast-changing social media platforms. It’s no longer just about tattooing, you also have to shoot and edit videos, and create posts that capture people’s attention. Since I’m not someone who enjoys being flashy, that part can be difficult for me. My tattoo style is subtle rather than dramatic, so I’m constantly thinking about how to let my quiet, detailed work stand out.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a tattoo artist?
The most rewarding part of being a tattoo artist is meeting amazing clients and colleagues. I feel deeply grateful for everyone who respects my work, supports me wholeheartedly, and shows genuine kindness. Even those who have never met me in person but encourage me through social media mean a lot. I truly appreciate every one of them.

What’s your experience at tattoo conventions so far?
Although I’ve been tattooing for quite a while, I’ve only participated in one tattoo convention so far, the one held in Melbourne, Australia, two years ago. Unfortunately, I didn’t win any awards, but it was my first experience attending and participating in such a large-scale event, and it became a truly meaningful memory for me.

Do you remember the first tattoo convention you have ever been to?
I was extremely nervous at first. The first hour of tattooing was quite difficult because it was my first time working in front of a large audience. Having so many strangers watching me work was intimidating, but after a few hours, I started to relax and genuinely enjoyed the atmosphere.

What’s your primary reason to attend a tattoo convention?
I’m not the type of artist who constantly moves from studio to studio or does frequent guest spots, so attending conventions feels like a fresh source of motivation for me. It’s a great opportunity to meet and learn from skilled artists around the world, and it always reminds me that I still have so much room to grow.

What advice would you offer to someone considering a career as a tattoo artist?
Be consistent, be humble, and always be willing to learn, those are the words I constantly repeat to myself. Some people might interpret them differently, but I often remind myself, “You’re just an ordinary person – stay humble and keep trying to improve.” This mindset keeps me grounded and pushes me to grow, both as an artist and as a person.

Who are the people you admire the most within the tattoo community?
There are a few people who come to mind. Two of them are Unco and Baegi, the owners of Frame Tattoo Studio in Korea. They’re not only artists I deeply respect but also close friends. We all started tattooing around the same time, and I truly admire how they’ve never stopped working hard and evolving since the beginning. Another artist I deeply respect is Q-Tattoo, the owner of Nonfromseoul Studio in Los Angeles. When I was in Korea, I took a tattoo lesson from him and received a lot of valuable advice and inspiration that still influences me today.

What are your goals or dreams for the near future?
Starting from 2026, I plan to participate in more international conventions and challenge myself with larger, more ambitious projects. I also hope to meet artists from different countries, exchange inspiration, and grow through those creative connections.
