From childhood memories of admiring tattoos on television to overcoming cultural stigma in South Korea, Vold has transformed a passion into a lifelong purpose. Since 2019, he has been determined to solidify his stance and reputation in the tattoo scene, specializing in abstract tattoos and black work.
His creations exist and move in harmony with the body: working freehand directly on the skin, Vold builds designs from the flow of muscles, the structure of bones, and the body’s natural curves. Each piece becomes something that doesn’t just decorate the skin but undoubtedly belongs to it. Vold continues to push this delicate and breathtaking style forward by taking inspiration from the smallest details of everyday life and nature. Let’s get to know this incredible artist in an exclusive interview that delves into his past, present, and future in the tattoo world.
How would you like to introduce yourself?
Hello, my name is Vold, and I have been working as a tattoo artist since 2019. I specialize in abstract tattoos and black work. Based in Seoul, South Korea, I also frequently travel to different cities and countries as a guest artist.
If you had to define yourself in one word?
Vold.
Where did your fascination with tattoos begin?
When I was a child, I saw a man riding a motorcycle on TV. His arm was covered in tattoos, and at that moment, I felt an immense sense of freedom and admiration. That image captivated me and sparked my fascination with tattoos, eventually leading me to dream of becoming a tattoo artist.
What do tattoos mean to you personally?
Tattoos are the culture and art form I love the most. Through my career as a tattoo artist, I have traveled to many cities and met countless clients. Over time, tattoos have become inseparable from my life. The art form has truly become a part of who I am.
How did your family react when you decided to pursue tattooing?
Initially, there was considerable opposition. I believe South Korea still struggles to embrace tattoo culture fully, and I understand my parents’ concerns. But today, they are my biggest supporters and my greatest fans.
What has been the most rewarding moment in your career?
The most rewarding moments are when clients return to me after being satisfied with their first tattoo. Each time, I am deeply grateful that they value my work enough to come back. Another special joy is meeting clients from abroad who discovered me on Instagram and traveled all the way to Korea to get tattooed.
How would you define your current tattoo style, and how did you come to focus on it?
My work can broadly be described as abstract tattooing, and I primarily use a freehand approach that emphasizes flow. Since tattoos are created on the human body, I focus on the shapes of muscles, the structure of bones, and the body’s natural curves. By drawing directly onto the skin, I create designs that harmonize uniquely with each client’s body. This process has led me to develop my current style.
How do you keep your creativity flowing?
I find inspiration everywhere in daily life, from graffiti on the street to the texture of floor tiles, wallpaper patterns, the texture of wood, leaves floating on water, or the ripples created by a swimming duck. Even the most minor things can spark new design ideas.
What do you consider the most important ethic for a tattoo artist?
For me, it’s the mindset. Of course, skills, artistic ability, and hygiene are essential, but those can be learned and mastered through study and effort. What truly matters is the mindset, the attitude toward the craft and the way we treat our clients. I believe that is the core ethic of being a tattoo artist.
What is the biggest misconception clients often have about tattoos?
Some people believe that tattoos might not be painful. However, the truth is that they are always painful.
What advice would you give to aspiring tattoo artists?
Do not approach tattooing as just a job or a way to make money. Start this journey with a genuine love for the culture and the art itself. That passion will carry you further than anything else.
What goals or dreams do you hope to achieve in the near future?
I have not yet had the opportunity to work on a full bodysuit or a complete facial tattoo. My goal and dream as an artist is to continue researching, evolving, and eventually collaborating with the right client to create a stunning full-body suit or full-face piece.
Lastly, what message would you like to leave with our readers?
Thank you for taking the time to read my story. I wish happiness and fulfillment for everyone.
