For the readers who are not familiar with you, how would you introduce yourself?
I’m VEZO, a tattoo artist who reinterprets Korean and Eastern traditional elements within body flow designs. I currently work as a resident tattooist at Seoul Ink, located in Seoul, South Korea.

Where did your fascination for tattoos come from?
I’ve loved doodling and drawing since I was a kid. Then, after seeing cool tattoos in movies and dramas, those images stuck with me deeply. It wasn’t just about looking cool, I was drawn to the vibe, the business potential, and everything surrounding tattoos. I slipped into it almost naturally, without a single defining moment. One day, it simply became my life.

At what point in your life did you become a professional tattoo artist?
After finishing military service, my friend and I just decided, “Let’s move to Seoul, learn tattooing, and make it big!” I left home with nothing but a note saying, “I’ll come back successful.” The result? I couldn’t even get ten clients in my first year. I was basically broke. My passion and romantic ideals were overflowing, but my bank account was empty. Because of that promise to come back successful, I couldn’t go home for a long time. It’s funny looking back now.

I ended up facing reality and worked in a factory for about two years. I finally started making some money, but the dream I had folded away kept tugging at me. During breaks, I’d draw constantly. My hands were on machines, but my mind was always on tattoos. As I kept sketching, people started taking notice, and eventually, tattoo requests began coming in naturally. With more and more requests, I quit the factory and fully returned to tattooing. When you dream desperately enough, you eventually find yourself living inside that dream. I made my way back, and I realized this is truly my place.

How would you describe your relation with your customers?
A tattoo is ultimately a collaboration. But I’ve learned that as the artist, I need to take the lead to keep a clear flow. When there’s mutual trust, that’s when the best results happen. I see my role as guiding that direction.

Please walk us through your process when you start a new tattoo for your customers.
I always focus on how a design flows on the body. First, I thoroughly understand the client’s desired placement, then consider the composition, movement, and layout that will best complement it. There are many beautiful designs out there, but I’m more drawn to creating a cohesive flow that enhances the body rather than simply placing a pretty image. Depending on where it’s placed, the design can completely transform. Each person’s body shape and vibe are different. Especially for larger pieces, it’s crucial to highlight their natural curves and unique charm.

How would you define your current tattoo style and how did you end up focusing on it?
Rather than flashy elements, I focus on delicate textures, stippling, depth, and body flow. Instead of replicating the beauty of traditional art exactly, I reinterpret it in my own way through tattooing. Within the Eastern-inspired designs reconstructed to fit the body’s structure and flow, you’ll find my unique perspective and interpretation woven throughout.

I’ve always loved Korean and Eastern traditional art, and I felt there wasn’t a clearly defined “Korean tattoo” style. I wanted to express something uniquely Korean. That desire led me to develop my current style.

What’s a tattoo project that challenged your skills the most?
I once worked on a full upper body piece. I experimented with expressions and compositions I usually don’t use. Through that, I expanded the spectrum of my work, and it felt like a turning point for me.

How would you describe the tattoo scene in South Korea these days?
It keeps growing, even within restrictions. Suppression doesn’t kill style. If anything, it makes it stronger and more resilient.

What’s the most challenging aspect of being a tattoo artist in 2025?
I want to sharpen my sense of depth and direction even more. Even as I keep working, I constantly reflect on whether I’m on the right path.

What’s your experience at tattoo conventions so far?
Being in a space filled with artists of so many different styles and colors is such a special experience. That energy isn’t something you can easily find elsewhere. It feels like stepping into Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. Everything is so cool, exciting, and full of anticipation.

Did you ever participate at any tattoo contest?
I’ve entered twice. It felt more like an exhibition than a competition. There’s a unique weight to showing your work in person compared to photos or videos. I was lucky enough to win awards both times, and they remain great memories.

What’s your primary reason to attend a tattoo convention?
Ultimately, it’s all for creating better work. It’s where the best gather. You get inspired, you grow, and you can also develop as a brand.

What’s your favorite tattoo convention so far? And why?
Tattoo Time Chiang Mai. Just being in the same space as artists I’ve admired for so long was incredibly motivating. Working while sharing the same air with them left a deep impression on me.

What advice would you give to first-time artists attending or working at a convention?
Don’t be afraid. Fully enjoy it. You gain so much just by being there. Jump in without hesitation.

What advice would you offer to someone considering a career as a tattoo artist?
I started from absolutely nothing. There were times I survived on instant noodles twice a day for months. Passion and courage are important, but I think having at least a little bit of a safety net helps.

Who are the people you admire the most within the tattoo community?
Artists who firmly establish their own style yet refuse to stay complacent and keep expanding their horizons. That’s true coolness to me.

What’s your biggest accomplishment as a tattoo artist?
Meeting new people with each project and creating new work every time. Each piece is a challenge, and that itself is my greatest achievement.

How do you stay at the top of your game?
I try never to put the pen (or machine) down. I keep questioning and refining my designs. For me, there’s no end to drawing, tattooing, or learning.

What’s the most meaningful feedback you’ve ever received from a client?
Many Korean parents have a negative view of tattoos. One client told me they got smacked on the back by their parents after getting tattooed, but when their parents saw the piece, they said, “It’s beautiful.” That felt like a big win to me.

What are your goals or dreams for the near future?
I want to make my work leave a mark in the tattoo industry. It’s a distant goal, but a very clear one in my mind.

Do you have a sponsor? If so, what could you tell us about your sponsors?
I’m supported by EZ Tattooing. It’s a great relationship where we inspire each other.

Is there anything else you would like to tell our readers?
Getting a tattoo is representative of your style, your memories, and most importantly your personal story. I hope everyone gets an amazing tattoo that truly represents them.
