In this exclusive interview, Kiljun shares the reality behind Seoul Ink’s, and what it takes to thrive in Seoul’s ever-evolving tattoo scene. Whether you’re an aspiring artist, a dedicated collector, or simply curious about the pulse of Korean tattoo culture, this is a story worth reading.
Dear Kiljun, how would you introduce yourself to our readers?
I’m a tattoo artist and I represent Seoul Ink Tattoo, a custom tattoo studio based in Gangnam, Seoul. We’ve been here for over 15 years and are proud to have a team of 13 talented artists. On my side, I have 18 years of tattooing experience from all over the world, and I have helped shape the Korean tattoo scene.
How did you start your career in tattooing, and what drew you to the art?
Art has always been a part of my life. My mother is an artist, so I grew up drawing from as young as I can remember. I was drawn to subcultures like skateboarding and graffiti, which eventually led me to tattoos. While studying fine art, I picked up tattooing and haven’t looked back since.
You are based in Seoul, South Korea, one of the most vibrant and rapidly evolving cities in Asia. How would you describe the current tattoo scene in Seoul?
The tattoo scene in Seoul is as fast-paced and dynamic as the city itself. New artists are constantly emerging, while seasoned professionals continue to innovate. Together, we’re pushing boundaries and making Seoul a global hotspot for tattoos.
Seoul Ink Tattoo is located in Gangnam, a district known for its trendy and youthful vibe. How would you describe the influence of the area on your studio’s style and clientele?
Gangnam is arguably the trendiest district in Seoul, energetic, fashion-forward, and constantly evolving. Our clients reflect that. They value individuality and aesthetic detail, which pushes us to stay ahead of the curve by blending traditional tattooing with contemporary styles. And we’re know for Korea’s top destination for custom tattoos and exceptional client experience.
Can you tell us a bit more about your team?
Each of our 13 artists bring a distinctive style. This creative diversity drives us to keep learning from each other. Combined with clients who seek originality, we’re able to consistently create tattoos that are unique, and high in quality.

Managing a team of tattoo artists requires a unique skill set. What’s your secret to managing such a creative and diverse team?
It’s less about traditional leadership and more about a shared passion. When everyone genuinely loves tattooing, it creates a culture of mutual respect, attention to detail, and support, which ultimately results in a strong team and satisfied clients.
What qualities and skills do you look for when hiring artists to join your studio?
Talent is essential, but just as important is a strong work ethic and a drive to elevate. Passion and diligence go hand in hand.
What’s the process you use to match a client to the right artist in your studio?
Most clients start with an online consultation, followed by one in-person. This helps us match the design vision and an artists’ expertise. It’s a system we trust, and one that’s earned us a loyal following of returning clients.
What’s the typical process you go through when designing a tattoo for a client at Seoul Ink Tattoo?
It begins with a detailed consultation to understand the client’s vision and find the best-fitting artist. We evaluate placement and design to ensure it complements the client’s body and natural movement. On the appointment day, we finalize the design together before beginning the tattoo. Each tattoo we create is treated with equal care and creativity. Our goal is to make every piece special for the client, so every tattoo feels like a highlight.
Seoul Ink Tattoo is known for its wide range of tattoo styles. What are the 3 most requested types of tattoos in your studio?
We’re not limited to specific styles, but recently we’ve seen a growing interest in delicate, finely detailed designs, possibly influenced by our increasing number of female artists and clients. The shift leans away from bold, brash tattoos to more refined and personal pieces.
Seoul has a competitive tattoo scene. What do you think is your studio’s key to standing out in such a bustling and competitive city?
We’re one of Seoul’s longest-standing tattoo studios. With the global rise of K-culture, our work has reached audiences far beyond Korea. Our artists are highly specialized, and our studio offers unmatched versatility. That combination of quality and range keeps people coming back, many from overseas.
Are there any types of tattoos you would never do at your studio?
Yes, we don’t tattoo eyeballs, tongues, or service permanent makeup.
Do you host guest artists at Seoul Ink Tattoo?
Yes, but we’re selective to only a few guests at a time. We look for those who are not only technically strong but bring something fresh and unique, a true “wow” factor.
What’s the most challenging aspect of running a successful tattoo studio in 2025?
Nothing in particular, but if anything, balancing studio operations with my own tattoo work. There’s never quite enough time in the day.
What’s the biggest change you’ve seen in the tattoo industry in South Korea since you opened Seoul Ink Tattoo?
When I first started, tattooing was very underground and carried a heavy stigma. It wasn’t widely accepted as an art form. That’s changed a lot, especially among younger generations, who now see tattoos as a form of self-expression. Artistically, the growth has been huge. Our tattoo craftsmanship is now globally recognized, celebrated for its precision, creativity, and innovation, much like our fashion and beauty industries. It’s incredible to see Korean artists shaping the future of tattooing.
Do you ever attend tattoo conventions as a studio? What has been your favorite tattoo convention so far, and why?
Yes, we’ve been participating in conventions since 2007. Our artists especially enjoy the Gods of Ink Convention. We also love Salt Lake City and the Chiang Mai Festival. They’re well-organized, with top talent and great energy.
What is your primary reason for attending tattoo conventions?
To build relationships with other artists, promote our studio in new regions, and foster meaningful friendships.
In your opinion, how could tattoo conventions improve for both artists and the public?
More focus on genuine talent over connections would raise the bar. Adding cultural and creative events alongside tattooing could also offer a richer experience for attendees.
What advice would you offer to someone who’s considering a career as a tattoo artist?
Strong drawing skills are a must. You need to love it and practice constantly. A good mentor is also key. While you can learn techniques online, growth and mindset come from in-person experience. Don’t rush to find your style. Try different things and your unique voice will develop over time. Consistency. Stay active online and off. Keep learning, improving, and sharing meaningful work.
What are your plans for the near future for Seoul Ink Tattoo?
We’re planning to expand internationally, to more cities across the world.
Does your studio have any sponsors or collaborations? If so, could you share more about them?
Yes, we’re supported by trusted tattoo supply brands. We’re also open to collaborations and looking into brand partnerships to expand our new creative projects.
Lastly, is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers about Seoul Ink Tattoo?
We’re a studio that never stops evolving. Our mission is to keep delivering top-tier tattoos and helping more people appreciate and enjoy tattoo culture, whether as clients, fans, or fellow artists.
