For those who don’t know you, how would you introduce yourself?
Hi, I’m Yana Sulina, a tattoo artist with nearly a decade of experience, originally from Ukraine. I studied design and spent four years learning academic drawing and painting, which gave me a strong foundation for my tattoo journey. I specialize in realism — both in black and gray and vibrant color tattoos. My path has taken me across Europe, and now I’m continuing to grow as an artist in the U.S., exploring new creative directions.

How did your interest in tattooing begin?
It all started with my love for drawing. Tattooing felt like the perfect way to express emotion; it’s personal and eternal. I was amazed by the idea that a drawing could live on someone’s skin and carry deep meaning.

How and when did you start tattooing?
I started in 2015, after working in design and painting. At first, tattooing was just an experiment, but I quickly fell in love with the process and knew this was it. My first tattoo happened almost by accident. I met a guy at a gathering who did tattoos, he saw my sketches and said, “Let’s turn one into a tattoo.” The next day, I tattooed him. It was an exciting experience, although now I realize it was technically rough and a bit traumatic for the skin. But it came out well, and from that moment I knew I wanted to learn and pursue tattooing seriously.

Where are you currently based?
I’m based in Philadelphia, USA. It’s a city full of atmosphere and creativity. It really speaks to my soul. Back in university, when I dreamed of the perfect place for artists and designers, I imagined something with the exact energy I feel here.

How would you describe the tattoo scene in your country today?
It’s constantly evolving and becoming more open, artistic, and international. There’s growing appreciation not only for technique, but also for storytelling through tattoos.

How would you define your tattoo style?
I work in realism, often with a painterly approach, both in color and black and gray. I enjoy blending softness with contrast and aim to create emotionally rich, visually expressive tattoos that feel like paintings on skin.

What kind of projects do you enjoy most?
Those that offer creative freedom and carry meaning. It could be portraits, surreal compositions, or symbolic imagery. I especially enjoy transforming ideas from canvas to skin.

What inspires your tattoo work the most?
Emotions, nature, fire, and art itself. I’m drawn to contrasts, calm and power, light and shadow. My personal growth plays a big role too. The world is evolving quickly, and I want to move forward with it, not stand still.

What is the biggest challenge for tattoo artists in 2025?
Balancing creativity with business, social media, promotion, staying visible, while staying true to yourself as an artist.

And what’s the most rewarding part of your job?
Seeing someone wear your work with pride and emotion. Knowing you’ve become a part of their story, that’s powerful. I also often do cover-ups, and I love giving tattoos a second life.

What’s your experience with tattoo conventions?
For several years, I took part in various tattoo conventions across Ukraine, especially during the early stages of my career. In recent years, I’ve been participating in conventions in the U.S., including events in Philadelphia and Baltimore. This month, I’m planning to attend the New York Convention. Next year, I’d love to take part in more European conventions. I really connect with the creative energy, atmosphere, and diversity of the tattoo scene there.

Do you remember your first tattoo convention?
Yes, it was in Lviv in 2015. I was just starting out and felt a mix of nerves and awe. That experience gave me a huge push forward.

What’s your main goal when attending conventions?
Connection — with fellow artists, new clients, and fresh inspiration. It’s always a step outside your comfort zone, and that’s where growth happens.

Which convention has been your favorite, and why?
The Baltimore Convention in 2025. I won first place in the “Best Sleeve” category with a Diablo-inspired piece. It was a big milestone in my career.

What advice would you give someone who wants to become a tattoo artist?
Be patient. Focus on mastering the technique first and everything else will follow. Don’t rush. Your style and recognition will come with time, effort, and authenticity.

Who do you admire most in the tattoo community?
Those who stay true to themselves, push creative boundaries, and support others. Artists who bring original ideas and strong technique. Over the past year, I’ve met so many inspiring tattooers and I’m proud to be part of this industry. This year, I also became a member of the Tattoo Artists Association in the U.S., and I’m grateful to grow with them, not just artistically, but in terms of safety, education, and technical standards too.

What do you consider your greatest achievement as a tattoo artist?
Building a name beyond one country, winning awards, being published in magazines. But most importantly, staying true to myself throughout the journey.

Do you do any other forms of art besides tattooing?
Yes, I paint, mostly emotional and textured pieces. I recently launched a project called Flamebrush, where I first create a painting, and then translate its essence into a tattoo.
