For the readers who are not familiar with you, how would you introduce yourself?
Hi! My name is Tommaso Dozzo, also known as Tommy D. I’m a tattoo artist from Bologna, Italy, and I’ve been working professionally in the industry for the past 9 years. I specialize in realism, working with both color and black & grey, always aiming to replicate portraits or references down to the finest detail.

Where did your fascination for tattoos come from?
It started pretty early. I have memories and there are photos of me as a baby surrounded by tattoo stickers—it was always part of who I was. I’ve been drawing since I was a kid, and tattoos just felt like the natural evolution of that passion.

At what point in your life did you become a professional tattoo artist?
Right after high school. I started tattooing and practicing for a few months, focusing on building my skills and portfolio. It was a crucial learning period. After 9-10 months, I got the opportunity to start to work in a shop in Bologna, and that’s when things really started to take off professionally.

And where are you based now?
I’m currently still based in Bologna, Italy. I also do guest spots regularly in Nancy in France, in Belgium and Germany throughout the year.

How would you define your current tattoo style, and how did you end up focusing on it?
My style is realism, I love capturing the most intricate details in both color and black & gray. I’m a perfectionist by nature, so realism gives me the challenge I crave. I was always drawn to portraits and photographic detail, so it made sense to focus on that.

Please walk us through your process when you start a new tattoo for your customers.
First, I talk to the client to understand their vision, reference images, and expectations. Then, I create a digital mockup to fine-tune placement and scale. Once we’re both aligned, I prepare the stencil, set up my station, and work in layers—focusing on building depth, contrast, and realism as I go. I don’t rush; I believe precision is everything.

What’s the most challenging aspect of being a tattoo artist in 2025?
The market is extremely oversaturated right now. Standing out requires not only great work but also constant innovation, self-promotion, and adaptability.

Did you ever participate in any tattoo contests?
Yes, I’ve competed in several. One of the most prestigious conventions I’ve attended was Icons & Prodigies in Venice, which is highly selective. It’s an honor to be among such top-tier artists.

What’s your primary reason to attend a tattoo convention?
Mainly for exposure and networking. It’s a great way to reach new clients, build connections with other artists, and gain visibility in the international scene.

How do you think tattoo conventions could improve for artists and the public?
More attention to the quality of organization and better promotion of individual artists could help. Also, making sure booths are designed to give artists enough space and lighting to work comfortably makes a big difference.

What’s your favorite tattoo convention so far? And why?
Definitely the Icons & Prodigies in Venice. It’s selective and has an incredible lineup of international talent. The atmosphere is electric, and the standards are really high which I love. Other conventions that I admire a lot are the Milan Tattoo Convention and the Gods of Ink in Frankfurt.

What advice would you offer to someone considering a career as a tattoo artist?
Be patient. Focus on mastering your fundamentals drawing, understanding skin, and hygiene. Don’t rush into tattooing clients until you’re truly ready. Also, be humble and never stop learning.

How would you describe the tattoo scene in Italy these days?
Italy has an incredibly competitive tattoo scene, with many highly skilled artists. That kind of environment pushes me to level up constantly and refine my work every single day.

Who are the people you admire the most within the tattoo community?
I admire many artists who’ve mastered realism and still keep pushing boundaries. People who are constantly evolving and never get too comfortable inspire me the most. If I have to name the artists who inspire me the most, I would say Steve Butcher, Silvano Fiato, and Dmitriy Samohin. Obviously, it’s not just them. I really admire and respect many artists.
