Hello Rich, how would you like to introduce yourself to our readers?
I’m Rich Harris, a UK-based tattoo artist known for creating large-scale, bold, abstract surrealism tattoos. My work blends realism, geometric, graphic elements, thick lines, and vibrant colour. I started tattooing at 33 after years of working in other creative fields like music and illustration, and I’ve never looked back.

Where did your fascination for tattoos come from?
It actually started way back in school when I was 10 years old I’d draw teenage mutant ninja turtle sleeves on my friends’ arms with biro pens. The idea stuck with me, but I didn’t give it proper attention until much later in life. The moment I got the idea to work in my friends studio, I realised this was something I could genuinely commit my life to.

How and when did you start tattooing?
I started in 2012, when I was 33. My best friend had just started tattooing at home, and another friend opened a studio, so I took the opportunity to dive in. I built my portfolio and got started professionally straight away. It was a huge shift in my life, but it finally felt right after a decade of trying to figure out what I wanted to do which was anything to do with art and creating characters.

Where are you based?
I’m based in the UK, though I travel often for guest spots and conventions internationally.

How would you describe the tattoo scene in the UK these days?
There’s a lot of talent and creativity and potential here in the UK, along with a lack of self belief which is a real shame but also a need for better quality control. I’d love to see more regulation around hygiene and licensing something to raise the baseline and protect clients from scratchers setting up without real experience.

How would you define your tattoo style?
Abstract surrealism. I mix realism with graphic elements, geometric patterns, and vibrant colors, often in large-scale formats. My work evolves constantly, but it’s always built around strong composition, emotional impact, and clarity from a distance.

What kind of tattoo projects do you like to do the most?
I have started creating more of a story with my compositions now, a real meaning that I find interesting. In the past it was purely for aesthetic. I especially love when a client gives me creative freedom, it’s where the best work happens.

What’s the main source of inspiration for your tattoos?
It’s a blend. Films, music, photography, nature, travel, and other artists. I’m constantly building a visual library from daily life. Honestly, I get my best ideas when I’m relaxed and not actively working.

What’s the most challenging aspect of being a tattoo artist in 2025?
Evolving. With so many incredible artists and digital tools, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. The key is staying authentic and constantly evolving without losing your core.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a tattoo artist?
Seeing a concept come to life on skin and having clients wear your work with pride, it never gets old. The connection and trust involved make the whole experience meaningful.

What’s your experience at tattoo conventions so far?
I don’t think I will be doing many in the future as I’m concentrating on other projects but really positive. They’re intense but fun. You get to meet artists you admire, connect with clients, and see new techniques and gear in action.

Do you remember the first tattoo convention you have ever been to?
Yes, I was blown away. It was inspiring and humbling at the same time, I saw firsthand just how high the bar could be.

What’s your primary reason to attend a tattoo convention?
To network, push my skills in a high-pressure environment, and get inspired by seeing what others are doing.

What’s your favorite tattoo convention so far? And why?
Tough one. I’d have to say the original Tattoo show London which stopped in 2019 and was run by Miki Vialelto and Marcus Berriman. Paris, Milan, and Brussels. Each has a great vibe, amazing artists, and loads of creative energy. I can’t choose just one.

What advice would you offer to someone considering a career as a tattoo artist?
Build a solid portfolio first. Know how your work flows on the body. Then seek out an apprenticeship with artists you admire. Book a tattoo with them if you can. And remember, attitude is everything. Be persistent, humble, and always hungry to learn.

Who are the people you admire the most within the tattoo community?
Way too many to name! I’m always finding new inspiration. I find the bigger names who operate a a high level are the most humble, they have nothing to prove and don’t get involved with the small minded tit tat that can usually go on within the industry. Check out who I follow on Instagram you’ll get a sense of the artists who influence me.

What’s your biggest accomplishment as a tattoo artist?
Starting a whole new career at 33 and building a life around my art. That, and developing a style that feels truly mine. Every year I push to evolve and raise the bar.

Do you do other forms of art besides tattooing?
Yes, I paint large scale, I do photography, and I’ve produced music for years. Lately, I’ve been exploring other ideas which you’ll be seeing very soon!

What are your goals or dreams for the near future?
To expand my retreats, launch new creative projects, and push my work in new directions maybe even explore other mediums on a bigger scale outside of tattooing. I want to keep evolving without boundaries.

Is there anything else you would like to tell our readers?
Be yourself and keep moving, invest in yourself, believe in yourself, make sure you’re in an environment where you feel good! This is such an important factor that many people miss, find your people :)
There’s no one way to do things in this industry. If you stay curious, focused, and true to your own vision, you’ll stand out in all the right ways.
