This opportunity to meet diverse clients abroad and work from new perspectives was a pivotal moment, broadening his skills and outlook.
How would you introduce yourself to our global audience?
Hello, I’m Junghwa, a tattooist from Korea. I’m using character design, oriental red rope, animal, and flower tattoos. Sometimes I love changing animations into my style and getting tattoos.
At what point in your life, did you decide to become a professional tattoo artist?
At that time, I was in my third year of tattoo experience, and it was my dream to go abroad, meet foreign customers, and work on tattoos. With such a good opportunity, I went abroad for the first time last year to meet customers and get tattoos from so many different perspectives and angles. I gained a lot of experience and became a professional tattooist from then on.
How do you balance creativity with your client’s personal vision?
When I make tattoo designs, I think of this as food; if you provide food ingredients, I think it’s like making a dish that you’ll like every time. I’ll choose what kind of food I’ll make, but I’ll aim to make it delicious. I think you and I are a new team.
How would you define your tattoo style, and how did you end up focusing on it?
At first, I started tattooing with character design. However, I felt that I lacked tattoo skills and design skills, so I started lightly, using only a single line to develop basic line skills in tattooing against the background of flower and animal designs. Now I have added an oriental feel to it. The main design is the same as the character. I love both of them now.
Please detail the procedure when you start a new tattoo for your client.
I first ask the customer what they want in detail. For example, I make sure to determine the position of the snake’s head, the hairstyle, the angle of the head, etc., and devise the design. Before starting the design, I ask the customer for as many photographs and opinions on the design as possible. After completing the exterior line of the design, I confirm it with the customer. After that, I show the first design to the customer and finally show it again when the design is completed.
Have you ever participated in a tattoo contest?
I haven’t participated in a convention yet. If I have a chance, I would like to participate. From the next overseas schedule, I will go to countries where conventions are held and look around.
Any advice for anyone considering a career as a tattooist?
I think it’s important what you did during that time in your career. Please take a close look at their skills first.
What is your biggest achievement as a tattooist?
Well as I’ve mentioned earlier, I haven’t participated in a convention yet as a tattooist. I don’t have any awards, but I think a big achievement for me is to satisfy the new customers I meet every day with my wonderful tattoos.
What are your goals or dreams for the near future?
Someday, I want to participate in a convention and win an award. To do so, I want to be a more perfect tattooist.
Is there anything else you would like to say to your readers?
Hello, this has been Junghwa. Thank you so much for being able to meet many guests while traveling abroad until now. I will continue to work as hard as I am now to become a better tattooist.
