Hugo Feist Interview

For the readers who are not familiar with you, how would you introduce yourself?
I’m Hugo Feist, a tattoo artist specializing in black and gray realism, with a strong focus on dark fantasy themes. My work blends elegance with a touch of unease, aiming to create pieces that feel both visually striking and emotionally compelling. More than anything, I just see myself as someone who loves creating art and connecting with people through it.

Where did your fascination for tattoos come from?
It wasn’t an instant obsession, but more of a slow realization. I’ve always been drawn to art, especially classical painting, but the idea of tattoos as a medium really clicked when I saw how deeply personal and permanent they are. They carry meaning, memories, and emotions in a way that other forms of art don’t.

At what point in your life did you become a professional tattoo artist?
It was a gradual process. I started as an apprentice, learning the craft, making mistakes, and improving little by little. The moment I felt like a “professional” was probably when people outside of my circle started seeking me out, trusting me with their skin. That’s when I realized this wasn’t just a passion, it was my path.

Where are you based?
Right now, I’m based in Pasadena, California, but I travel a lot for guest spots and conventions. I love working in different places, meeting new people, and experiencing different tattoo cultures.

How would you describe the tattoo scene in your country these days?
The tattoo scene is always evolving. It’s more respected as an art form than ever, which is great, but with that comes more competition and higher expectations. Social media has changed everything, it’s both a blessing and a challenge. But at the core, tattooing is still about the connection between artist and client, and that’s something that hasn’t changed.

How would you define your current tattoo style and how did you end up focusing on it?
I would describe my style as black and gray realism with a dark fantasy influence. I’ve always been drawn to contrast light versus dark, beauty versus discomfort—so it felt natural to focus on a style that plays with those elements. Classical paintings, mythology, and surrealism all inspire me, and I try to bring that depth into my tattoos.

Please walk us through your process when you start a new tattoo for your customers.
It all starts with a conversation. I like to understand what my client is looking for, but I also appreciate when they trust me to interpret their idea in my own way. Once we settle on a concept, I work on the design, making sure it flows well with their body. During the tattooing process, I take my time. I’d rather take longer and make sure every detail is right than rush through something permanent.

What’s the most challenging aspect of being a tattoo artist in 2025?
Staying relevant while staying true to yourself. With social media, trends move fast, and there’s a lot of pressure to constantly produce new work. But I think the key is to evolve without losing your artistic identity.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a tattoo artist?
The trust people put in me. Every time someone gives me a piece of their skin to create something meaningful, it’s an honor. Seeing their reaction when the tattoo is finished, knowing they’ll carry it with them forever—that feeling never gets old.

What’s your experience at tattoo conventions so far?
I love conventions. They’re exhausting but inspiring. You get to meet artists from all over, exchange ideas, and push yourself outside your usual environment. It’s a reminder of how big and diverse the tattoo world really is.

Did you ever participate in any tattoo contests?
Yes, I have, but winning isn’t really my goal. It’s more about the experience, the exposure, and meeting new people. That being said, it’s always a great feeling when your work gets recognized.

What’s your primary reason for attending a tattoo convention?
Learning, growing, and connecting. I always leave a convention with fresh inspiration and new perspectives.

How do you think tattoo conventions could improve for the artists and the public?
Better organization, more focus on the artists rather than just the spectacle, and making sure clients have a better understanding of the work that goes into each tattoo. Sometimes conventions feel rushed, and I think giving artists more space and time to work would benefit everyone.

What’s your favorite tattoo convention so far? And why?
That’s a tough one. Every convention has something unique to offer. I think my favorite ones are those where the vibe is right good energy, talented artists, and people who appreciate the craft.

What advice would you offer to someone considering a career as a tattoo artist?
Be patient. There are no shortcuts. Focus on your fundamentals, drawing, shading, composition. Learn from others but don’t just copy. And most importantly, respect the craft.

Who are the people you admire the most within the tattoo community?
There are so many. I admire artists who are not only talented but also humble and willing to share their knowledge. The ones who push the boundaries of tattooing while staying true to themselves.

What’s your biggest accomplishment as a tattoo artist?
Honestly, just being able to do this for a living. Every day I get to create art and work with amazing people, and that in itself feels like an accomplishment.

How do you stay at the top of your game?
I never assume I’m at the top of my game. I’m always learning, always pushing myself to improve. I study other art forms, experiment with new techniques, and try to stay inspired by everything around me.

Do you do other forms of art besides tattooing?
Yeah, I still love painting and drawing. It keeps my creativity fresh and helps me explore ideas that might later influence my tattoo work.

What are your goals or dreams for the near future?
I just want to keep growing as an artist. Maybe travel more, collaborate with artists I admire, and keep evolving my style.

Do you have a sponsor? If so, what could you tell us about your sponsors?
I do, and I’m incredibly grateful for their support. Working with high-quality products makes a huge difference in the work I do.

Is there anything else you would like to tell our readers?
Just a huge thank you to anyone who supports my work. Whether it’s clients, fellow artists, or just people who appreciate tattooing as an art form, I wouldn’t be here without that support, and I never take it for granted.
