How would you like to introduce yourself?
Hi, I’m Frankie Sexton from Singapore. I specialize in anime-style tattooing and have been honing my craft for over 12 years now. And I must say, it’s been an incredible journey bringing beloved anime characters and stories to life through ink.
Where can your customers find you?
You can find me tattooing at Singapore Electric by Gimmelovetattoo (@electric.sin), right here in Singapore.
How would you describe the tattoo scene in Singapore these days?
The tattoo scene in Singapore has grown tremendously. Compared to the past, where tattoos were often misunderstood or frowned upon, today it’s much more accepted and appreciated as a true art form and self-expression.
Where did your fascination for tattoos come from?
My fascination was ignited by my love for anime and manga as a kid. The vibrant characters and storytelling captivated me, and I wanted to bring that passion into something permanent and personal.
What does tattooing mean to you personally?
For me, tattooing is more than just art. It’s a way to connect with people, share stories, and create something meaningful that lasts a lifetime.
At what point in your life did you decide to become a professional tattoo artist?
In my early 20s, I had an epiphany. Why not combine my love for anime and art into a career? From that moment, it was all about honing my skills and making tattooing not just a hobby, but my lifelong profession.
Did you go through an apprenticeship? How was that experience?
I didn’t have a traditional apprenticeship from the start. Instead, I was fortunate to receive mentorship from Augustine Nezumi (@gimmelovetattoo), who provided invaluable guidance and helped me find my footing in the tattoo world.
Do you usually do guest spots? If yes, what’s your experience in doing them?
Yes, I do guest spots quite often. Early in my career, travelling to different studios worldwide helped me meet amazing artists, learn diverse techniques, and grow both professionally and personally.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a tattoo artist?
Seeing a client’s joy when they see their tattoo completed. It’s an incredible feeling knowing I helped create something meaningful for them. That’s the kind of magic that never gets old.
How would you define your current tattoo style, and how did you end up focusing on it?
I specialize in anime-style tattoos. Growing up glued to anime and manga, it felt like the perfect way to bring those stories I loved off the screen and onto skin. It’s like turning my childhood obsession into a lifelong career. And honestly, I’m still geeking out about it.
How do you stay creatively inspired?
I constantly consume new anime, manga, and art across mediums. Travelling and connecting with other artists also fuels my creativity.
Do you have sponsors? If yes, what could you tell us about your sponsors?
I don’t have sponsors at the moment, but am open to opportunities that align with my style and values.
How do you stay at the top of your game?
It’s a combination of grinding it out with constant practice, staying humble enough to truly listen to feedback (both the good and especially the not-so-great). And never settling.
Who are the people you admire the most within the tattoo community?
I really look up to Augustine Nezumi, Alexander Grim, and Jon Dix. Their dedication to the craft is nothing short of inspiring. Particularly when they’re tackling those massive, jaw-dropping large-scale tattoos. Watching them work is inspiring.
What is your experience at tattoo conventions so far?
Tattoo conventions have been incredible opportunities to connect with artists and clients worldwide, share knowledge, and showcase my work.
What’s your favorite tattoo convention so far? And why?
If I had to pick, my top three would be Singapore Ink Show, Gods of Ink, and Mondial Du Tatouage. All of them bring together an incredible blend of local legends and international heavyweights. And each feels like home in its own way.
Have you ever had the opportunity to participate in any tattoo contests? You are welcome to specify your awards.
I’ve jumped into a few local contests early in my career. They were nerve-wracking, but the invaluable experiences helped boost both my confidence and visibility in the scene.
What are your goals or dreams for the near future?
I’m passionate about pushing my creative boundaries, exploring new styles, and collaborating with artists around the world. Ultimately, I want to be remembered as an artist who stayed true to their passion and helped push anime tattooing to new heights.
