From painting graffiti on the streets of Venezuela to creating tattoos meant to last a lifetime, Chaz’s journey is driven by curiosity and an instinct to keep moving forward. Now based in the quiet, nature-filled city of Ourense, Spain, his work leans toward expressive Black and Grey Realism, with a strong focus on portraits and animal tattoos and character rather than strict stylistic rules.
In this interview, Chaz talks about searching for permanence, the thrill of tattoo conventions, the importance of emotional connection, and the simple joy of seeing a client’s reaction. It’s an honest look at an artist still evolving, still hungry, and deeply in love with the endless possibilities of tattooing.
For readers who may not be familiar with you, how would you introduce yourself?
My name is Chaz. I’ve been part of the tattoo world for many years now, and I can honestly say it’s a fascinating universe, one I hope to keep exploring and learning from for a long time.
Where does your fascination with tattooing come from?
When I was 19, after spending a lot of time painting graffiti in the streets, I felt the need to look for something new, something that wouldn’t disappear with time. Tattoos felt like the perfect answer. There’s nothing more permanent or meaningful than that.
How and when did you start tattooing?
I began tattooing in March 2019 in Venezuela, thanks largely to the support of my family. They saw potential in my drawings, at least, I like to think so (laughs). Maybe they just didn’t want to see me painting graffiti in the streets anymore and risk getting arrested.
Where are you currently based?
I’m currently living in the small city of Ourense, Spain, surrounded by mountains and trees. I try to stay as connected to nature as possible.
How would you describe your tattoo style?
My style is still evolving. What truly matters to me is giving emotion and feeling to every piece I create.
What types of tattoo projects do you enjoy working on the most?
I especially love doing portraits and animal tattoos, but I’m always open to experimenting with other styles and pushing myself creatively.
What is the most rewarding aspect of being a tattoo artist?
Seeing the reactions of my clients and friends when they look at their tattoos and realizing I’ve exceeded their expectations. That moment is everything.
What has your experience at tattoo conventions been like so far?
Very positive, honestly, and it’s only made me hungrier to participate in even more.
What motivates you most to take part in tattoo conventions?
The desire to win is something I’ll probably carry with me my entire life. But just as important is the chance to enjoy time with other tattoo artists, connect, and really get to know each other. That’s something I never want to miss.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career in the tattoo industry?
Don’t overthink it! Just do it.
Which artists do you admire most within the tattoo community?
Roberto Carlos, Emersson Pabon, Cachii Tattoo.
What has been your greatest achievement as a tattoo artist so far?
Seeing my mother smile after tattooing her.
Do you practice any other forms of art besides tattooing?
Yes. I paint, draw, and occasionally still do graffiti.
What are your goals or dreams for the near future?
I hope to discover more places around the world thanks to tattooing.
