How would you like to introduce yourself?
My name is Alfrey, and on Instagram, I go by @Alfreytattoo. I’ve been tattooing professionally in Singapore since 2014.

How would you describe the tattoo scene in Singapore these days?
The tattoo scene in Singapore these days is amazing. Not too long ago, tattoos were socially unacceptable, but Singapore has progressed, and now they are widely accepted and recognized as an art form. I want to thank our pioneers for paving the way and breaking through, enabling someone like me to continue pursuing tattooing here.

Where did your fascination for tattoos come from?
My fascination began when I saw gangsters in my neighborhood with large chest-to-arm tattoos and full back pieces. It was extremely rare to see someone with a full sleeve back then. We used to skip school to get tattoos, and during one session, I felt that one day I wanted to tattoo these fierce but beautiful designs myself.

How did your family react when you started a career in tattooing?
They did not take it well at all because tattooing wasn’t considered a real job at the time.

Did you go through an apprenticeship? How was that experience?
Yes, my first apprenticeship involved sweeping and mopping the studio daily, scrubbing about 18 tubes a day, and serving walk-ins. It was physically and mentally exhausting with long hours and no salary, but I was fortunate to find the strength to keep going until things started to look hopeful.

What did your first tattoo look like?
My first tattoo was on myself because it was very hard to find clients back then, as there was no social media, only word of mouth.

Do you usually do guest spots?
No, I don’t. I was taught that it was rude to ask for a guest spot unless there was an established relationship or an invitation.

As a tattoo artist, what does your daily working routine look like?
I head over to the studio, start my sessions, and head home after work, just like most people.

What’s the most challenging aspect of being a tattoo artist in 2025?
Social media. We have to put a lot more focus into it to get our work out there.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a tattoo artist?
Seeing your draft and idea come to life as a complete piece, especially large-scale works.

How would you define your current tattoo style, and how did you end up focusing on it?
I prefer doing Asian-influenced themes now, adding Asian elements into my work.

How do you balance client requests with your artistic vision?
Most of my clients come with ideas based on my current work, but ultimately let me decide what’s best for them, as they trust I can bring their ideas to life, which isn’t always exactly what they initially imagined.

As a tattoo artist, what kind of tattoo ethics are really important to you?
To never take a client for granted and always try to push your limits within the craft.

What do you think separates a good tattoo artist from a great one?
A good tattoo artist copies; a great tattoo artist creates.
