Hello Katsu, for readers who are not familiar with you, how would you introduce yourself?
I am a tattoo artist from Hiroshima, Japan, and I enjoy creating Japanese-style tattoos.
Where did your fascination for tattoos come from?
When I was younger, tattoos were strongly associated with Yakuza and criminals, making them rare in everyday life. However, they also symbolized masculinity, and endurance. I think I was fascinated by their underground and mysterious nature.
How and when did you start tattooing?
I began tattooing in 1995 in my hometown Hiroshima, teaching myself all the techniques. At the time, tattoos had a negative image, so I worked discreetly from an apartment rather than a studio.
And then you moved to the Netherlands?
Yes indeed. I moved to the Netherlands in 2018 and am currently based in Gouda, a small city near Rotterdam, The Hague, and Utrecht.
How would you describe the tattoo scene in Japan?
In Japan, tattoos have become more visible in public since the country opened up to more tourists. While some challenges remain, I’m optimistic about the future of the Japanese tattoo scene and look forward to its continued evolution.
How would you define your tattoo style?
My style is a unique Japanese style based on traditional culture, with special attention to colors and “bokashi” of backgrounds. What kind of tattoo projects do you like to do the most?
I enjoy all projects where clients trust me to use my unique style.
What’s the main source of inspiration for your tattoos?
Japanese culture, and Buddhism, as well as timeless works of traditional woodblock prints and ukiyo-e art, continue to be a major source of inspiration for me.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a tattoo artist?
Completing each piece and sharing the sense of achievement and satisfaction with my clients makes the experience deeply rewarding.
What’s your experience at tattoo conventions so far?
It has been an amazing experience meeting and reconnecting with artists, seeing inspiring tattoos and artwork, and even winning some awards.
What’s your main reason for attending tattoo conventions?
To meet people, find inspiration, and showcase my work. I’m not good with social media, so attending conventions a few times a year allows me to connect with others in person, which keeps me motivated. What’s your favorite tattoo convention so far? Why?
Every convention I’ve attended has been amazing. Each one has different rules and organization, which can be confusing, but I find that unpredictability part of the fun.
What do you consider your biggest achievement as a tattoo artist?
When I started, I couldn’t make a living from tattooing and had to work multiple jobs. Now, being able to fully support myself as a tattoo artist is my greatest accomplishment.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I’d love for more people to see my work. Thank you for reading to the end!
