We are stoked to present this exclusive interview with Tito Tanti, from Malta! Tito began his tattoo journey at only 14 years and he built a very solid reputation thanks to his bold and colorful Anime tattoos. Let’s dive into his story and insights within the tattoo industry.
For the readers who are not familiar with you, how would you introduce yourself?
Hello, I’m Tito Tanti from Malta (a small island in the Mediterranean), and I’m passionate about art in all its forms, especially when it’s shaped like ANIME.
Where did your fascination for tattoos come from?
It all started when I was 5 years old and my father came home with his first tattoo. From that moment on, I always knew I wanted to be a tattoo artist.
How and when did you start tattooing?
I started tattooing when I was 14 years old. I bought my first tattoo kit online and began experimenting, mainly on my own skin.
Where are you based?
I’m based in Malta, where I was born and have always lived. I run two tattoo shops here. The @Tito Tatts Tattoo Studio Malta and the Just Because Us Tattoo Malta.
How would you describe the tattoo scene in Malta these days?
The tattoo scene in Malta has grown exponentially over the last two years. Despite being a small island, there are now hundreds of tattoo artists. The most popular style here is Black and Grey, but what sets me apart is that I specialize in vibrant, colorful tattoos, particularly ANIME and SURREALISM.
Which begs the question, of how would you define your tattoo style?
My style is mainly defined by color. I focus on Japanese ANIME, Cartoons, and Surrealism, using vibrant colors mixed with greys to give my tattoos a three-dimensional feel.
What kind of tattoo projects do you like to do the most?
I enjoy creating tattoos that tell a story, particularly from the world of ANIME scenes from the story, battles between protagonists, and dramatic moments. When it comes to surrealism, I love combining faces, optical illusions, and abstract shapes to give the tattoo movement. All of my projects are large-scale, typically covering entire arms or legs.
What’s the main source of inspiration for your tattoos?
My inspiration mainly comes from the ideas and concepts provided by my clients, as well as the titles they give me. I always aim to create something unique, drawing inspiration from various art forms. I also have many artists who inspire me, pushing me to improve my own work.
What’s the most challenging aspect of being a tattoo artist in 2025?
The biggest challenge today is the obsession with fame. Many people rely on photo and video editing apps to get attention, which detracts from the true art of tattooing.
On the opposite spectrum, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a tattoo artist?
The most rewarding part is when people, both clients and others, stop to admire your work and give positive feedback, often in awe. It’s also incredibly gratifying when someone tells me, “Your tattoos look even better in person than on social media.” But above all, I feel truly appreciated when a client chooses me to create their tattoo. It may sound simple, but it’s the best way to know your work is valued.
What’s your experience at tattoo conventions so far?
In the last two conventions I attended, I participated in events in Rome, Florence, and Malta, where I took home some prizes.
Do you remember the first tattoo convention you ever attended?
The first convention I attended was in 2016, held in Malta.
What’s your primary reason for attending a tattoo convention?
I attend conventions to showcase my work to a broader, international audience and to connect with other artists, exchanging ideas and experiences.
What’s your favorite tattoo convention so far? And why?
My favorite convention so far has been the one in Florence. The one I would love to participate in is the New York convention at the Empire State.
What advice would you offer to someone considering a career as a tattoo artist?
My biggest advice is to prepare yourself on all fronts. To succeed, you must work hard and constantly strive to stand out because the competition keeps growing. So, my recommendation is to find your own unique style.
Who are the people you admire the most within the tattoo community?
The artists I admire the most are Paul Booth, who pioneered realism and dark tattoo styles, and Boris, who revolutionized tattooing with color.
What’s your biggest accomplishment as a tattoo artist?
My biggest accomplishment was when I showed my work to Boris during a convention, and he complimented me, telling me I should participate in that convention. Of course, there have been other achievements, such as winning awards at various conventions and mentoring apprentices, but that first experience remains the most significant.
Do you do other forms of art besides tattooing?
Yes, I also create art in other forms, including canvas paintings, hand-painted shoes, and mini paintings.
What are your goals or dreams for the near future?
My dream is to take my art around the world and hear as many stories as possible from people who choose to carry my art on their bodies.
How would you like to close this interview?
What I’d like to add is an invitation to anyone interested in working with me to reach out so we can bring new projects to life together. See you around the world!
