A Tattoo Co - Brian Interview 1

For the readers who are not familiar with you, how would you introduce yourself?
Born in Calgary, AB, I have been honing my skills for over 20 years, drawing inspiration from my early experiences with art and a relentless drive to evolve.

Where did your fascination for tattoos come from?
Being around it at a young age as well as always being artistic for as long as I can remember

At what point in your life, you became a professional tattoo artist?
Started very young being around tattoo artists but professionally since the 2000’s era.

Where are you based?
I’m the owner of A Tattoo Co in Abbotsford, which is located just outside of Vancouver, BC in Canada. It’s beautiful here, so if you have a chance to visit – don’t forget to pop in for a tattoo :)

How would you describe the tattoo scene in your country these days?
Honestly, I think is over saturated. The younger generation also has a different attitude than in the past, of what it takes to really become a good tattoo artist.

How would you define your tattoo style?
I would describe my style as new school illustrative macabre, blended with realism. I’ve always loved the darker side of things, and love being able to incorporate it into my pieces. I’m known for my line work and attention to detail. I’ve been focusing more on realistic pieces lately – and loving the process from start to finish.

What’s the main source of inspiration for your tattoos?
My main inspiration comes from nature, especially animals. I really enjoy recreating images in Black and Grey – sometimes adding a little color to highlight a feature. I’ve always loved being creative, so when a client comes to me with their ideas, it gives me a chance to come up with new designs I may not have thought of before.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a tattoo artist?

I love seeing the clients’ reaction after I finish their tattoo.  Some clients have a hard time imagining what their idea will look like, so being able to bring that to life for them is so rewarding.

What’s your experience at tattoo conventions so far?
Amazing and so much fun to do and can’t wait to start traveling the world to experience them all.

What’s your best memory out of any tattoo convention you have been to so far?
My best memory so far is when I got to sit down with my now good friend, Edward Best, and talked about equipment and old school tattooing.

What’s your primary reason to attend a tattoo convention?
I really enjoy meeting other like-minded artists, and being able to work alongside some of the best artists in this industry is always inspiring. Plus – getting my name out there by working at these conventions is great for business, as well as making new friends and networking. We’re all there to have fun and create amazing pieces, so it’s nice to be in an environment that’s catered to that.

What’s your favorite tattoo convention so far? And why?
The Calgary Tattoo Convention
. The owners are artists and understand what’s needed to put on a great show. They bring in so much amazing talent for the stage as well, so it’s always a good time. Even the vendors they have are great. It’s nice to have such a variety of things to see and do at their shows. It’s run so well, with great sponsors too!

What advice would you offer to someone considering a career as a tattoo artist?
Take your time and get an apprenticeship, do it properly.

Edward Best
, Paul Tougas, Paul Booth, Bob Tyrell and many more.

What’s your biggest accomplishment as a tattoo artist?
These days, every industry is having a hard time with things. Since I opened my shop – it hasn’t been easy but I’m happy to say that even after covid hit, I’m still doing well. Plus, I get to work with great people, and I love what I do so – there’s never a bad day at A Tattoo Co.

How do you stay at the top of your game?
Even on days when I’m not tattooing, I’m constantly learning new things related to tattooing. I talk to my fellow tattoo artists about how they do things or go over new techniques, and push myself to be better every day. There’s always something new to learn, I’m dedicated to my craft and always open to new ideas.

Do you do other forms of art besides tattooing?
Yes painting, drawing, metal work, air brushing.

Do you have a sponsor? If so, what could you tell us about your sponsors?
I don’t yet but I’m looking for one.

What are your goals or dreams for the near future?
I’m looking into getting my work visa so that I can travel across the border to do more tattoo conventions, I’d love to be able to travel more throughout the world, meet new people, see new places, and see how this industry is around the globe. I’d still keep my shop as a home base, but it would be great to be able to bring my art anywhere.
