For the readers who are not familiar with you, how would you introduce yourself?
My name is Nicolás Suárez, a realistic tattoo artist and art lover.
Where did your fascination for tattoos come from?
My fascination with tattoos began when I was a child, as my father and uncle are professional tattoo artists.
That’s interesting! So at what age did you start tattooing?
I started tattooing at the age of 15 in Paysandú, Uruguay with a machine that I made myself.
And where are you currently based?
I currently live in Lugo, a city in the region of Galicia (Spain).
How do you perceive the tattoo scene in Spain these days?
I would say that tattooing in Spain is very well received and valued.
How would you define your tattoo style?
My tattoo style is really focused on Black & Grey Realism.
What kind of tattoo projects do you like to do the most?
My favorite projects are doing tattoos of older people’s faces.
Coming from a family with a tattoo tradition, who gave you the main source of inspiration?
My main source of inspiration was my father and my uncle who were my references.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a tattoo artist?
The most exciting thing about being a tattoo artist is seeing the gratitude and happiness of your client when they see the piece done.
What’s your experience at tattoo conventions so far?
I don’t have have much experience at tattoo conventions yet, but I definitely shared some good times and I saw many well-known artists at conventions.
Do you remember the first tattoo convention you have ever been to?
I will always remember my first convention because I did a collaboration tattoo with a great friend and we came second in the the Realism category.
What’s your primary reason to attend a tattoo convention?
My main reason for attending a tattoo convention is to meet new artists, learn and share with them my love for tattooing.
What advice would you offer to someone considering a career as a tattoo artist?
The advice I would give to someone who is starting out in the tattoo world, is to be really passionate about what they do and to be very patient; which sooner or later will pay off.
Who are the people you admire the most within the tattoo community?
Some of the people I admire most in the tattoo world are Samu Rico and Yomico.
Looking back at your own career, what’s your biggest accomplishment as a tattoo artist?
My greatest achievement as a tattoo artist was opening my own tattoo studio and barbershop in Spain. The Black Memory Tattoo Barber in the city of Lugo.
Do you do other forms of art besides tattooing?
Apart from tattooing, I do paintings on canvas and skateboards.
What are your goals or dreams for the near future?
My goal as a tattoo artist is to get more recognition for my work and obviously continue improving my technique.
