Meet Lucas, a highly skilled self-taught tattoo artist from Denmark who has mastered the art of Black and Grey Realism . Let’s uncover his journey and hear his experience within the tattoo industry.
For the readers who are not familiar with you, how would you introduce yourself?
Hey, my name is Lucas, also known as Luckylucaztattoo. Usually, people just call me Lucky. I’ve been tattooing since the start of 2018, and I’m not good at taking a day off—I just love this work and lifestyle.
Where did your fascination for tattoos come from?
My dad always had some tattoos, and he once tried to get started in the industry. Unfortunately, it was really tough back then, and he never really got started.
I have always been drawing with him—we drew all kinds of things, from animals to tribals. I’ve always been fascinated by the heavily tattooed look.
How and when did you start tattooing?
I started out as a scratcher in my parents’ basement, and when I was done with my education, I began my apprenticeship at a small local shop.
There, I was mostly by myself, trying to learn from watching videos and analyzing photos to understand the different techniques and which materials and needles were used.
Where are you based?
I’m based in Copenhagen, Denmark.
How would you describe the tattoo scene in (your country) these days?
The tattoo scene in Denmark has a lot of variation, from some of the world’s best artists to the regular scratchers.
How would you define your tattoo style?
My style is usually bound to Realistic Black and Grey. I do all types of themes, almost always as sleeves or other larger projects.
What kind of tattoo projects do you like to do the most?
I always love to do sleeves—both legs and arms.
What’s the main source of inspiration for your tattoos?
My main source of inspiration is all the amazing artists from around the world, but I can get an idea from almost anything I see.
What’s the most challenging aspect of being a tattoo artist in 2025?
The most challenging part must be that nowadays you have to do more than just make tattoos.
You have to spend a lot more time on social media. But I always like a challenge, so I’m working on getting better at that part too, with content and such.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a tattoo artist?
The most rewarding part must be all the people choosing me for their tattoos. It’s such an honor to mark people with something I’ve created.
What’s your experience at tattoo conventions so far?
I love conventions. It’s so nice to come out and meet a lot of people from the industry.
As I said before, I love challenges, and it’s always a challenge at conventions with all these great artists in the industry.
Do you remember the first tattoo convention you have ever been to?
Yes, I do. It was so overwhelming to meet many of the people I had started out following. I also made a lot of new friends there.
What’s your primary reason to attend a tattoo convention?
My primary goal is to be with all my friends there, and maybe make a few more along the way. And if I’m lucky enough to bring home a prize, even better.
What’s your favorite tattoo convention so far? And why?
So far, my favorite convention must be the Nordic Ink Festival in Denmark. Everything is so well-organized.
What advice would you offer to someone considering a career as a tattoo artist?
Draw a lot and make sure to do thorough research on which studios are professional in your area.
Then do whatever you can to get your apprenticeship started there.
Who are the people you admire the most within the tattoo community?
There are too many to mention them all. Yasik, Kindamo, Kiyoharu, Ruben, Maksim, and Ossian are a few. But I could go on forever—there is so much talent and skill in the industry now.
What’s your biggest accomplishment as a tattoo artist?
My biggest accomplishment, besides this, must be some of the awards and prizes I’ve won at conventions against other amazing artists.
Do you do other forms of art besides tattooing?
When I can find the time and place for it, I do graffiti and paint canvases. But I love to do everything creative and try out new mediums whenever I can.
What are your goals or dreams for the near future?
My current goal is to get invited to some of the biggest shows here in Europe and to work on getting a visa for the States.
