For the readers who are not familiar with you, how would you introduce yourself?
I’m Fernando, a tattoo artist and visual creator known as Ego Sum Lux Mundi. My work explores a fusion of mythology, history, and spirituality, blending ancient symbolism with a contemporary graphic approach. I specialize in bold, clean linework, often inspired by religious iconography, classical themes, and Mediterranean traditions.
With over 10 years of experience, I’ve built a strong presence in the tattoo industry, working across Europe and preparing for my USA tour in 2025. Beyond tattooing, I also develop illustrations, merchandise, and exhibitions, continuously expanding my artistic practice into new mediums.

Where did your fascination for tattoos come from?
At first, my introduction to tattoos was purely out of curiosity. I never thought about becoming a tattoo artist. It started just for fun, without any specific expectations. However, over time, it developed into a deep interest and a powerful way to express my creativity. Tattooing allowed me to explore and refine my artistic style, merging historical, mythological, and religious influences into something personal and recognizable. Beyond that, it became a medium through which I could connect with others who share similar interests, creating a bridge between my artistic vision and my audience.

At what point in your life did you decide to become a professional Tattoo Artist?
I started tattooing 10 years ago in Barcelona, while I was studying for my university degree in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage. At that time, I was deeply immersed in fine arts, constantly exploring different artistic disciplines. At first, tattooing was just a way to experiment, create, and push my artistic boundaries. However, my interest grew more and more over time, and with patience and dedication, it eventually became my main activity and true passion.

Where are you based?
I’m currently based between Barcelona and London. In Barcelona, I work at Onas Tattoo Studio in Sarrià, and in London, I tattoo at Studio Almost Hackney. Besides that, I travel regularly across Europe for guest spots in renowned studios, visiting cities like Berlin, Munich, Paris, Zurich, and many more.

How would you describe the tattoo scene in Spain these days?
The tattoo scene in Spain has grown tremendously in recent years, becoming more diverse and dynamic. There’s a strong community of talented artists exploring a wide range of styles, from traditional to the latest trends. Tattooing is more accepted than ever, and many studios are embracing a more artistic and professional approach, moving away from old stigmas. Everything is changing fast, but definitely in a good way, opening new opportunities for artists and pushing the industry forward.

How would you define your tattoo style?
My tattoo style is a fusion of mythology, history, and spirituality, expressed through bold, clean linework and a strong focus on symbolism. I take inspiration from ancient art, religious iconography, and classical compositions, blending them with a modern, minimalistic approach, often incorporating red highlights to enhance the visual impact and create contrast.

What kind of tattoo projects do you like to do the most?
Even though it might sound simple, my favorite projects are medium-sized flash tattoos. I really enjoy chill sessions, where the placement isn’t too difficult for my client, allowing us to have a conversation about the piece, its symbolism, and the experience behind the tattoo. It’s a way to create meaningful artwork while also spending a relaxed and enjoyable time together. Of course, big projects are a lot of fun too, but they can be physically and mentally demanding. That’s why sometimes I appreciate working on smaller pieces.

What’s the main source of inspiration for your tattoos?
As I mentioned before, my work is deeply inspired by mythology, history, and ancient cultures. I draw a lot of influence from religious iconography, classical compositions, and symbolic imagery, blending these elements with my signature approach. I’m particularly fascinated by the spiritual and narrative power of ancient civilizations, especially those from the Mediterranean and Mesopotamian cultures, including their characters, legends, and myths. Other elements, such as medieval art and Japanese manga/anime culture, are also important references for me.
At the end of the day, even philosophy and literature blend together in a river of interests and influences, shaping the way I create my pieces.

What’s the most challenging aspect of being a tattoo artist in 2025?
For sure, one of the biggest challenges today is how to connect with the audience. Years ago, being a tattoo artist was mainly about tattooing; now, it’s much more than that. It’s about marketing, reaching the right audience, advertising, developing a unique style and authenticity, creating content, organizing travels, and so much more. Many people don’t realize that tattooing is actually the easiest part of the business nowadays. The real challenge lies in everything that happens behind the scenes, managing social media, building a brand, staying relevant, and constantly evolving. It requires not only artistic skills but also strategic thinking and adaptability to keep up with an industry that’s changing faster than ever.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a tattoo artist?
In my case, I’d say the most rewarding part is the freedom to choose and create, to dedicate time to research, explore, and develop my own artistic vision while continuously growing as an artist.

What’s your experience at tattoo conventions so far?
To be honest, I haven’t been to many tattoo conventions yet. Because I travel so frequently, doing two or three guest spots each month around Europe, my schedule has been pretty packed, and conventions haven’t been my main focus. However, it’s definitely something I’m looking forward to exploring more seriously. I believe attending more conventions would be a great way to connect with other artists, experience different scenes, and reach new audiences.

Do you remember the first tattoo convention you have ever been to?
Yes! My first tattoo convention was around 2018 or 2019 in Leeds, and it was an intense experience. The convention was super busy, and I remember feeling nervous at first, but everything worked out fine. I didn’t even have a second to chill; it was just non-stop tattooing the entire time.

What’s your primary reason to attend a tattoo convention?
For me, the main reason to attend a tattoo convention is to connect with the audience in a different way. Nowadays, everything happens digitally, through a screen, so I feel that conventions offer a more personal and authentic experience where I can interact with clients in a realistic and friendly environment. At the same time, conventions are a great opportunity to meet and share experiences with other tattoo professionals.

What’s your favorite tattoo convention so far? And why?
I can’t really choose, as I feel that I still need to attend more tattoo conventions and probably explore them in a different format. I’ve seen many great events in the USA, and I believe that experiencing conventions there could be a key next step in my career. Until I’ve had the chance to fully immerse myself in more conventions, I don’t think I have enough feedback and memories to pick a favorite just yet. But it’s definitely something I plan to explore more in the future.

What advice would you offer to someone considering a career as a tattoo artist?
I don’t really like to give advice because I believe everyone needs to find their own path. Most of the time, when you give advice, people either don’t listen or just try to copy others, which takes away from their individuality. I think the best approach is to analyze, reflect, and truly understand what you want to achieve and who you want to be. Stay focused on your goals, but most importantly, don’t lose your personality in the process. Finding your own voice and artistic identity is what will truly set you apart.

What’s your biggest accomplishment as a tattoo artist?
I believe my biggest accomplishment is being able to make a living from my art while staying true to my style and vision. Tattooing has given me the freedom to create, travel, and connect with people who resonate with my work, which is something I value deeply.

Do you do other forms of art besides tattooing?
Yes, I do a lot of things. I spend many of my days researching, learning, and exploring new artistic disciplines. I’m deeply into art in general, from painting and sculpture to more experimental approaches. Recently, I’ve been really into embroidery, and I’m currently crafting a new artwork series that mixes my tattoo sketches with embroidery techniques. It’s an exciting project that allows me to blend different mediums and push my artistic expression in new directions, it’s going to be epic.

What are your goals or dreams for the near future?
My biggest goal right now is to move to the USA and take my career to the next level. I’m currently in the process of applying for the visa O-1, and I hope to manage everything soon so I can finally connect with my audience in the USA in a more direct way. Once I get there, I want to attend more tattoo conventions and work in studios across the country, expanding my reach and immersing myself in the American tattoo scene. It’s a big step, but I’m excited for the opportunities and experiences that will come with it.
