Today we’ve got a chance to share a story of wonderful tattoo artist from South Korea, who specialize in portrait tattoos. Let’s read about Ellyn’s story!
For the readers who are not familiar with you, how would you introduce yourself?
I am Ellyn, tattoo artist working in the United States. I primarily specialize in portrait tattoos. In addition to tattoos, I also work in various fields such as nipple tattoos for breast cancer survivors, skin cover tattoos for vitiligo patients, and semi-permanent makeup tattoos.
How and when did you start tattooing?
I originally graduated from an art school in Korea and was running my own semi-permanent makeup business. While performing eyebrow, eyeliner, and lip procedures with a machine, I naturally developed an interest in tattooing, which involves drawing on the body with a machine. This sparked a passion in me to learn more about tattooing.
Where are you based?
I am currently based in Los Angeles, USA.
What’s the main source of inspiration for your tattoos?
For me, the main source of inspiration for my tattoos is accurate representation. In the genre I primarily work in, portrait tattoos, this aspect is one of the most important. I especially do a lot of family portraits, as they are often done to remember someone dear. Capturing the unique essence of that individual is the most crucial point. In the field of medical tattoos, accurately recreating the lost parts, such as areolas or skin color, is also key. Therefore, I always find inspiration in researching and observing how to best achieve that faithful representation.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a tattoo artist?
The most rewarding aspect is when my clients are satisfied. Most clients get tattoos to remember their precious loved ones who have passed away or to capture significant moments that have gone by. Seeing them find happiness in being able to carry those memories on their bodies for a lifetime gives me a sense of fulfillment. Additionally, through medical tattoos, I feel rewarded when clients, especially those who have lost their areolas due to breast cancer, say that they feel a great sense of mental satisfaction and a regained sense of femininity.
What’s your experience at conventions so far? I know you’ve received many awards related to tattooing and semi-permanent makeup conventions. Could you provide more details about the specific awards you’ve won?
When I was working in Korea, I participated in and served as a judge at global semi-permanent and medical tattoo competitions. Notably, in 2018, I received the World Grand Prix Prize at the K-International Beauty Contest and was awarded a commendation by the National Assembly. Additionally, in 2018, 2019, and 2022, I won various awards in the tattoo and semi-permanent makeup categories at the World K-Beauty Festival. This led to my role as a tattoo judge in 2022.
What’s your primary reason to attend a tattoo convention?
The primary reason is the opportunity to gain a lot of experience and see the skills of various artists from around the world. Participating in friendly competition broadens my perspective and provides a wealth of information.
What’s your biggest accomplishment as a tattoo artist?
As I mentioned above, I also garnered many awards at competitions as a contestant.
And especially as a medical tattoo specialist, being able to cover scars from surgery or congenital imperfections provides great physical and mental satisfaction to clients, which is the most valuable and fulfilling aspect of the job.
What are your goals or dreams for the near future?
I am currently working not only on just tattoos but also on medical tattoos and semi-permanent makeup. I want to further develop my expertise in these fields, working with machines and ink. My goal is to expand my business and positively impact those who require my skills.
Is there anything else you would like to tell our readers?
Thank you for always showing interest. I will continue to work hard and develop in my field, so please keep watching and supporting me.
