Today, we are glad to present Cyan, a very gifted tattoo artist from South Korea, who is known for his NeoTraditional tattoos characterized by bold outlines and striking colors. Drawing inspiration from nature and the world around him, Cyan’s designs are a perfect blend of classic and modern tattoo styles. In this interview, Cyan shares his journey into tattooing, the challenges he’s faced, and his vision for the future of his art.
For the readers who are not familiar with you, how would you introduce yourself?
Hello. My name is Cyan and I’m from South Korea. I’m focusing on neotraditional tattoos.
How did you get into tattooing?
When I was a kid, I studied art and dreamed of becoming an artist. Also, at 19, I seriously started thinking about which job I wanted to pursue, and I got interested in tattoos. I felt that it was something special because when I tattoo someone’s body, it remains even after they die.
At what point in your life, you decided to become a professional tattoo artist?
In 2014, I went to a tattoo shop near my house to learn tattooing after being introduced by a friend. But it was so different from my vision, so I just left and reached out to some people to get advice. I also grew up by myself and am always thankful to those who helped me at that time.
Where are you currently based?
I’m based in Gunpo, a small city in South Korea, but actually, I spend almost half of the year abroad.
How would you describe the tattoo scene in Korea these days?
Well only 10 years ago, many people still had a negative perception of tattoos in Korea. But it started to become popular with small tattoos, and as the demand gradually increased, more fake artists emerged who were only in it for the money. But now, things are getting back to normal. I hope that people take the industry seriously and that more people continue to make consistent efforts.
What can you tell us about your Neo Traditional tattoo style?
I’m trying to do my best and change constantly, so it’s hard to clarify. Right now, I usually use bold outlines and fancy colors. Using these techniques, I like to create designs with flowers and animals. I’m very excited to express myself through these subjects.
What’s the main source of inspiration for your tattoos?
I get inspiration from various types of art, like photos of animals, plants, movies, anime, and masterpieces of other artists. When it comes to colors, I tend to observe my surroundings carefully, paying attention to what I see and feel, like someone’s fashion, street decorations, signboards, and interior designs.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a tattoo artist?
When the customer feels happy with my artwork, I’m very proud of myself. I hope they keep their good memories of me and my artwork for their whole life.
What’s your experience at tattoo conventions so far?
I’ve competed with other artists at different places and made friends along the way. It was so exciting for me, and I can’t forget these experiences.
Do you remember the first tattoo convention you ever attended?
Sure. I competed in the Subcon Tattoo in Korea in 2019. At that time, I won two awards, and it motivated me to push harder. In Korea, tattooing is illegal, so I couldn’t tattoo there, but the important thing is that I am working hard to help legalize tattoos in Korea.
What’s your primary reason for attending tattoo conventions?
It’s because when I go to tattoo conventions, I can meet various tattoo artists and compete through contests. When I’m in these intense situations, I can focus more compared to usual. During the process, I can step up my game.
What’s your favorite tattoo convention so far? And why?
In France, at the Rouen Tattoo Festival. It was a very memorable convention because it was my first time tattooing at a convention, and I learned and felt many things. I also made many friends there. After that, I’ve participated in this convention every year.
What advice would you offer to someone considering a career as a tattoo artist?
Sometimes, when studying tattooing, you have to choose between life stability or art. I think if you want to be an artist and not just a businessperson, you should consider, “Why am I doing tattoos?” There’s no clear answer, but if you set your own standards, you’ll be able to figure out what to do next.
Who are the people you admire the most within the tattoo community?
There are two people I admire the most: Hany and Tak Irezumi. Long ago, they supported me a lot and gave me advice on the mindset needed for tattooing. I also really respect their tattoo skills.
What’s your biggest accomplishment as a tattoo artist?
I think I don’t have any fancy accomplishments yet. Needless to say, winning prizes at conventions is special, but actually, when customers have confidence in my artwork, that is the biggest accomplishment for me.
Do you do other forms of art besides tattooing?
No. I don’t know how to do anything except drawing and tattooing.
What are your goals or dreams for the near future?
I’m planning to participate in some more conventions and I want to get good results from them.
Is there anything else you would like to tell our readers?
Thank you for taking the time to read this. Keep trying and be an unstoppable artist.
