For the readers who are not familiar with you, how would you introduce yourself?
I am Bullyart, a 32-year-old tattoo artist specializing in black and grey realistic tattoos, based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where I have immersed myself in the tattoo industry for over a decade. In addition to tattooing, I am the proud founder and owner of ICONIC Studio – Art & Gallery, a unique space where tattooing meets traditional art.

How & when did you start tattooing?
My tattooing journey began 11 years ago, while I was still in school. I took the brave step to abandon everything and pursue my dream of becoming a tattoo artist. After a challenging period of building my portfolio and seeking an apprenticeship, I was finally accepted into a tattoo studio.

What do tattoos symbolize for you?
For me, tattoos symbolize freedom and the beautiful capability to create one’s reality through art.

Where are you based?
I’m based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

How would you define your tattoo style?
My style is grounded in realism, leveraging a black and grey palette to emphasize contrast in my pieces, enhancing their longevity.

What kind of tattoo projects do you enjoy doing the most?
I derive immense satisfaction from working on statues and sculptures, bringing them to life through tattoos.

What’s the main source of inspiration for your tattoos?
My primary sources of inspiration are digital art, movies, and mythology, supplemented by high-resolution and high-contrast photographs that aid in crafting detailed designs.

What’s the most challenging aspect of being a tattoo artist in 2023?
The present challenges include maintaining focus amidst the surge of mass production spurred by digital marketing and social media trends, which can easily sidetrack an artist.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a tattoo artist?
The ultimate reward is earning a client’s trust, showcasing my talent through their choice. Seeing a piece evolve and come to life during application, and witnessing the joy it brings to a client, is a remarkable and fulfilling experience.

What’s your experience at tattoo conventions so far?
I have had enriching experiences at tattoo conventions, which have fostered a sense of community, inspiration, and networking opportunities, allowing me to connect with other artists in a vibrant atmosphere.

Do you remember the first tattoo convention you have been working at?
Yes, it was TattooWeek Rio at the International Tattoo Convention in Rio de Janeiro. It was a fantastic inaugural experience, teeming with talented artists and positive vibes.

What’s your number one reason to attend a tattoo convention?
Attending conventions is a self-imposed challenge to step out of my comfort zone and grow further as an artist.

What’s your favorite tattoo convention so far? And why?
TattooWeek Rio holds a special place for me, mainly because I have not yet explored many conventions. However, I have curated a wish-list of the top 10 conventions I aspire to attend.

What advice would you offer to someone considering a career as a tattoo artist?
I would urge them to stay committed to perpetual learning and not succumb to the fleeting hype. Respecting the art and pushing oneself to evolve continually as an artist are crucial.

Who are the people you admire the most within the tattoo community?
Some artists I hold in high regard are Nikko Hurtado, Dmitriy Samohin, Thomas Carli Jarlier, Igor Mitrenga, Harrison Tattoo, and Denys Sivak.

What’s your biggest accomplishment as a tattoo artist?
The relentless pursuit of honing my craft and elevating my work over the past decade stands as my most significant achievement.

Which celebrity person would you really like to tattoo?
While I have had the privilege to work with renowned individuals, including football players, athletes, and musicians, there isn’t a specific celebrity I am targeting currently.

Do you do other forms of art besides tattooing?
Absolutely, I explore painting, sculptures, 3D modeling, and digital art alongside tattooing.

What are your goals/dreams for the future?
My vision for the future is rooted in continuous growth as an artist, pushing boundaries, and exploring uncharted territories in the world of art.
