Today's #TattooHistory: Betty Broadbent would enter the stage in a floor-length satin or velvet robe, depending on the weather. "And now, ladies and gentlemen, the lady who's different!" She would then unzip her robe & beneath she had a long bathing suit on that came four inches above her knees. Betty said that her act was a respectable one, "not like those carnival floozies with one or two tattoos who would bump & grind." ——————————————————————————— Betty Broadbent (1909 - 1983) was the most famous/most photographed female tattooed attraction of all time. She originally wanted to be an artist, but as she needed money, she decided to make her body a work of art instead. She started her career in 1927 after spending her savings on a tattoo body suit from Charlie Wagner & Joe Van Hart. Once women were allowed to show more of their bodies, Bert Grimm tattooed her upper legs & her bathing suit was shortened to display her thighs. She wanted to push the limits for women everywhere, & entered a beauty pageant in the 1939 World’s Fair in New York City, which was the first televised beauty contest of all time. Betty didn’t win the competition, but she turned quite a few heads & opened some minds to the possibilities of women being more than what they seemed on the surface. A long career for a female tattoo attraction was unusual, women in those days soon gave it up for easier work. But not Betty. As they say in the circus, Betty was 'with it and for it.' Alongside exhibiting her art, Broadbent tattooed others herself. She worked in shops across the country including in Montreal, San Francisco and New York. She resisted the "native capture" narratives that were used to draw patrons to tattooed attractions' acts. Betty was one of the last working tattooed ladies in the country when she retired from the circus world in 1967. In 1981 she became the first person to be honored by the Tattoo Hall of Fame. She died in her sleep in 1983. Broadbent lives on an icon representing the role/progression of women in tattoo history during her time. #bettybroadbent #tattooedlady #ladytattooers #womenintattoohistory #historicalsocietyoflongbeach #hslb #historicalsociety #bertgrimm ...
